Spring is a time for fresh starts. Flowers are in bloom, the weather is finally warming up again and it’s the perfect time for a good deep clean of your home. Spring cleaning allows you to get rid of things you no longer need or want and organize everything you plan to keep – all while dusting in places you haven’t thought about since last spring.
Below are a few suggestions to make sure you get the most out of your spring cleaning.
Wash window treatments
Wooden blinds can collect serious dust throughout the year and should be wiped with a damp cloth. Draperies and curtains, which also notoriously collect dust, should be cleaned either in the washing machine or taken to the dry cleaner. Be sure to check labels to clean properly.
Although it seems unusual, ceilings and walls need to be cleaned also. Use a vacuum to remove dust first, then move onto a solvent-free degreaser if necessary as surface grime can be difficult to remove with just soap and water.
Deep clean rugs
While rugs without backings require professional cleaning, synthetic carpets and rugs with waterproof backings can be cleaned using a rotary shampoo machine and a hot-water extraction machine. Be sure rugs are completely dry before stepping on them again.
Often overlooked, window hardware and doorknobs collect plenty of fingerprints and grime over time. Use a liquid polish for mildly-tarnished surfaces; however, heavier work may require a paste or cream.
All of those hard-to-reach places that are avoided throughout the year should be addressed during spring cleaning. Be sure to dust the tops of ceiling fans and window cases, as well as molding that is often ignored.
Clean air ducts
Air ducts should be cleaned at least once a year. Also, this is a good time to make sure your air filters have recently been replaced. It is suggested filters are changed every month or so.
