If the bone is displaced, of course, it’s easily identified; however, if the break is small or you’ve suffered a crack (also known as a fracture), it can be harder to tell. It’s important to identify the signs of a broken bone so medical help can be sought as quickly as possible.

First, let’s determine the different types of breaks that bones can suffer:

  • Non-Displaced Fracture: Any time the bone is partially cracked or cracked all the way through, but stays in its place so it’s properly aligned, it’s called a non-displaced fracture.
  • Displaced Fracture: If the bone snaps into two or more parts then moves so that the two ends are no longer aligned, the break is known as a displaced fracture.
  • Open fracture: Perhaps the most difficult break to witness, an open fracture happens when the bone breaks through the skin. With an open fracture, there is often a risk of a deep bone infection.
  • Closed Fracture: This type of fracture occurs whenever there is no puncture or open wound in the skin.

Although the severity of symptoms will vary depending on the type of fracture, at least one of the symptoms below will typically be experienced if a bone is broken.

  • Swelling or bruising over a bone
  • Deformity of an arm of leg
  • Pain in the injured area that gets worse when the area is moved or pressure is applied
  • Loss of function in the injured area
  • In open fractures, bone protruding from the skin
